Dr. Trance is an experimental project that attempts to blend exotic instruments with electronic-dance influences. These songs heavily rely upon synthesizers and automation within Ableton Live. It is an attempt at blending natural and organic sounds and human rhythms with those of mechanical timing and artificial timbres. It is an attempt to bridge the gap between electronic dance beats and the human touch which is unquestionably organic and unique. Production techniques often involve beat-mapping tools and tempo-mirroring of non-linear, human rhythms that provide a more natural foundation to layer upon. It's not perfect nor completely human, but some kind of Frankenstein hybrid. Mastering techniques include the use of filter sweeps and reverb washes that entrance the listener as if they were traveling through space and time. Perhaps one day some of this work may be performed live, however it is more likely to remain in the realm of personal and visual experience because it's much less satisfying to perform a song to a predetermined tempo or recording that isn't yet responsive to the whim of our shifting rhythms or spur-of-the-moment instincts. It's less human and less ecstatic and less alive when the heartbeat of a song is determined by a computer that has yet to emulate the unique responsiveness of the human spirit. I believe machines will never emulate the magic that lives within us but perhaps they may become good enough at being our mirror to fool us, while opening the doors to myriad other sonic possibilities.
